Octopus Fan Ban Ridiculous

It’s a ritual every April in Detroit during the playoffs. No, not the tossing of octopus on the ice as that seems to happen all season long now. It’s the controversy that erupts when the NHL steps in to to curtail the amount of not-so fresh seafood takes flight and lands on the ice at Joe Louis Arena. This year things have gotten a bit more high profile thanks to a report on Deadspin about a Wings fan who was allowed to enter the arena showing the arena staff that he had an octopus in his possession to then toss on the ice. Problems erupted for him moments later as he was then kicked out of the game and given a citation and fined $500 for living up to the annual tradition. NHL s...

Yotes or Preds?

The Detroit Red Wings have control of their own playoff matchup today as they travel to Chicago to face the Blackhawks in both teams' last regular season games of the year. Detroit has locked up the 3rd seed in the Western Conference, and Chicago needs a win to clinch eighth place. So as the teams get ready for their 12:30 start today, I was thinking about who I want Detroit to face in the first round. The only two possibilities are the Phoenix Coyotes and the Nashville Predators. To start, I think it's better than playing the Ducks or the Hawks as both are proven playoff teams. When you look at Phoenix and Nashville, nothing really scares you that much, which is something that makes...

Wake Up Call

Cam Janssen scored a goal tonight. No joke Wow. Just....wow. I don't think I've ever seen a more pathetic performance from my team in...well, ever. St. Louis just crushed them 10-3. St. Louis, who sit 13th place in the West. I might just throw all article-writing-rules out the windows here and go on my second rant as a member of the TCL team. Just how in the heck are the Red Wings ready for the playoffs? I listen to the radio after every game and the guy hosting always says they'll be fine. Well, watching this game it clearly was not the case. They didn't show anything. No talent, no passing, no puck support at all. The Blues walked all over them. The defence left Joey MacDonald out ...

Jakub or Rusty?

As the battle for playoff seeding culminates in the Western Conference, another battle is brewing in the Red Wings’ locker room. Defensemen Jakub Kindl and Ruslan Salei are in the midst of a fight for playing time, with each trying to secure that sixth and final spot on the Wings’ blue line as the team readies for its 20th straight appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Salei will be a healthy scratch tonight as Detroit hosts the St. Louis Blues at Joe Louis Arena. Kindl, who was scratched Monday in Detroit’s overtime loss to the Blackhawks, will play tonight. As of late, the two defensemen have been rotating in the sixth spot. But after Wednesday’s morning skate, Win...

Red Wings Crystal Ball

With the Detroit Red Wings looking to have locked up a top three seed, the only thing left to do is wait for their first round opponent. So, while we're waiting, Wings fans can check out my predicting skills when it comes to next year's season. All of the following points are things I believe can happen for the Wings, some being more or less likely than others. 1. Darren Helm will score 20+ goals Not only has Helm been one of the league's top penalty killers, he has also been the heart and soul of the Red Wings in every situation. If we look at his progression from his debut in the 2008 playoffs to now, his play has improved every year. He could always skate, and in 2009 he showed some...

Hobey Baker Finalist Signs

Gustav Nyquist with the Maine Black Bears The Detroit Red Wings just got even deeper. And 29 other GM's once again wonder how a Hobey Baker Finalist was scooped up by Detroit in the fourth round of the draft (121st overall). Another hidden gem, another hit for Wings' European scout Hakan Andersson. Gustav Nyquist has agreed to terms on a two-year, entry-level contract with the Red Wings and will forgo his senior year at the University of Maine. Nyquist will immediately join the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's American Hockey League farm team. Nyquist and the Red Wings agreed to the deal late Thursday. Detroit Assistant General Manager Jim Nill said this morning that Nyquist wi...

Five Issues Heading Into the Playoffs

The Detroit Red Wings sit in 2nd place in the Western Conference standings, 10 points out of first behind Vancouver, and only one point ahead of San Jose, who sits in third. Chicago has 88 points, so the likelihood of the Wings being a top three seed is good. Detroit has made the playoffs for 19 straight years going on 20. They made the conference finals in 2007, won the Cup in 2008, made the finals in 2009, and lost in the second round last year. So what happens this year? As a huge Wings follower, you always see the positives of the team you watch, but I also watch for the problems that they have. Here are 5 issues that the Wings have to solve in order for a deep playoff run: #1 - Home ...

CCHA, JLA, MIA

It was the CCHA at the JLA and MIA came out on top. The Miami Redhawks captured their first ever Mason Cup Central Collegiate Hockey Association Championship with a 5-2 win over the Western Michigan Broncos yesterday at Joe Louis Arena. The Redhawks outshot Western 25-16 for the game and exploded for 3 goals in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie to secure the championship. Miami beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 6-2 on Friday to advance to the finals, and Western Michigan upset the defending CCHA champs, the Michigan Wolverines, 5-2 to get to their second final appearance. Being at both games was a thrill, except the 3rd place game between the Irish and Wolverines seemed to lack a...

Ovie Boo Birds Show in 3-2 Wings Win

Photo Credit: nhl.com The Detroit Red Wings snapped the Washington Capitals nine game winning streak yesterday with a 3-2 win at Joe Louis Arena. Henrik Zetterberg scored two goals giving him 20 on the year and Brian Rafalski had three assists in his first game back after missing the previous eight with back spasms. Valterri Filppula also scored, while John Carlson and Alex Ovechkin scored for Washington. Zetterberg hadn't scored for a while until last night, and both his goals were beauties. The first was a one-timer from the high slot that he buried up high on Michal Neuvirth. The second he led a rush on his backhand and fired a high shot of Neuvirth's head and in for the winning...

College Hockey Invades Joe Louis Arena

In the midst of the Detroit Red Wings' stretch run, there is another stretch run going on in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), only in the playoffs. The CCHA Finals will be held on the 18th and 19th of March at the Joe Louis Arena. Of the eleven teams in the CCHA, four remain standing and will compete for the Mason Cup on Saturday. The Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Western Michigan Broncos and the Miami of Ohio Redhawks all advanced after winning their previous playoff round matchups: The four teams all finished in the top four in the regular season standings and all got a bye to the second round, beating their opponents, so it should be a tal...
