Red Wings Finish California Trip with 2-0-1 Record

The trip through California started with an exciting win on Tuesday over San Jose. Then there was the dominant game from Jimmy Howard for a 4-0 win on Friday over the Ducks. It ended with an OT loss to LA last night. All in all it was a successful trip. The Wings got 5 out of a possible 6 points. They are on a five game point streak and they still remain atop the Central Division and the Western Conference. Friday's game was all about Jimmy Howard. He faced 41 shots and stopped all of them. It was his second shutout of the season (the first was also a 4-0 shutout over the Ducks.) Jimmy Howard was the big reason for the win, but 4 goals is usually enough to win hockey games and Detroi...

Zetterberg Shines, Datsyuk Dazzles, Red Wings Keep Rolling

It's hard to talk about the Red Wings these days without sounding cocky. They are clearly the hottest team in the NHL right now. They can beat teams in so many different ways. Their power play is hot, their penalty kill is excellent, and they are dominant 5 on 5. And Jimmy Howard is proving doubters wrong. There are so many ways you can get burned when playing this Red Wings team. Last night it was Henrik Zetterberg that led the team to another victory. He dazzled all over the ice. And Pavel Datsyuk was, well... Pavel Datsyuk. The Red Wings were facing a Sharks team with a depleted defense, but it was still a great victory nonetheless. The Red Wings opened the scoring early in the fi...

Red Wings Get the Home and Home Sweep

Photo Credit: AP Photo Tonight's game was another important game in the race for tops in the Central Division and Western Conference. The game required a comeback from the Wings, but that was not a challenge for the very experienced veteran squad. The game started out as a tale of two great goaltenders as Jimmy Howard and Steve Mason both looked like they were on their game yet again. It seemed as if we were going to get a game very similar to Friday night's Wings Jackets meeting. But the Blue Jackets would get on the board first this time. In the final minute of the first period, Derick Brassard continued his great start to the season with his sixth goal to make it 1-0 Blue Jackets...

Red Wings Win Overshadowed By Injury

Photo Credit: AP Photo Last night's game was one for the goaltenders. Both Jimmy Howard and Steve Mason shined for their respective teams. The game was close, and Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings came out on top. With just 20 games played, the Wings still manage to sit atop the Western Conference and obviously atop the Central Division as well. It was an important win because of that fact. As hard as it is to believe, the Blue Jackets were also battling for first place in the west and the central. The Wings still have a game in hand on the Jackets, but it was an important win nonetheless. And it was a great bounce back win after a bad loss to Calgary on Wednesday. Johan Franzen opene...

Three Point Weekend With a Thrilling End

Photo Credit: Reuters Pictures The weekend started off on a bit of a frustrating note for the Red Wings, but ended in exhilarating fashion Sunday night. All in all the team walked away with 3 more points which is nothing to frown upon. To the recap... Friday night proved that sometimes you can play as hard as you want and have as many quality scoring chances as you want, but if you run into a hot goaltender goals will not be easy to come by. Jose Theodore was playing out of his mind Friday night. He was a big reason why the game was so close. Things looked bad early on in the game. The Wild jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period thanks to Brent Burns. Minnesota would ad...

Red Wings Cruise To Victory After Unbelievable Third Period

Photo Credit: AP Photo The Red Wings' offense simply exploded in the third period last night. It was looking for sure like we were going to see overtime. It started out as a very frustrating game because leads were very short lasting, and the Wings did not seem like themselves. They were in the single digits for shots in both the first and second period. That's never a good sign. The scoring started in bizarre fashion. Jarolslav Halak tried to bank the puck off of his stick to the back corner behind the net, but it ended up going into his own net. The puck went off the heel and tip of his stick and right into his net. It was an unfortunate bounce for Halak, but it give the Red Wings...

"He's a Happy Hudler Now"

It's been a rough path for Jiri Hudler this season. He was a healthy scratch for 3 games in late October and early November because he was not scoring at all. He then returned to the lineup and saw his drought continue for four more games. It's definitely not easy to return to the NHL after a season over in Russia. Just ask Nikolay Zherdev of the Philadelphia Flyers. The two leagues are entirely different. Hudler needed to realize that. The NHL is more about two way hockey, and Mike Babcock had to send Hudler that message. It looks like the message finally got through last night. Jiri and Red Wings fans everywhere let out a collective sigh of relief and a huge smile when Jiri Hudler finally ...

Mike Modano Signing Starting to Pay Off

Photo Credit: AP Photo It was sad to think of the possibility of Mike Modano retiring this past summer. But at the same time, it was also weird to think of him playing for any other organization other than the Stars organization. When you say the name Mike Modano, most people will picture him in Stars jersey. There was some talk of him going to Minnesota since the hockey state is where his career started with the North Stars, but Minnesota does not have a team capable of winning the Stanley Cup, so it would not have made sense. Mike Modano wanted to hoist the Stanley Cup again, and returning to his home state to play for a Red Wings team perfectly capable of making his dream come true ...

All is Well in Hockeytown

It may be early in the season, but it's never too early to get excited about a team that is playing up to expectations when expectations are very high. The Detroit Red Wings are one of the teams that I would say is fair to get excited about. Everything is going well right now (knock on wood of course.) Jimmy Howard is picking things up where he left off, Datsyuk has broken out of his early season funk, the third line has been fantastic in the past few weeks, and the the record for the Wings on home ice is just wonderful. It's hard to find anything to complain about. Don't expect the team to be satisfied or get excited. Winning is fun and the team is obviously happy, but they are in touch ...

Round Three For the Red Wings and Coyotes

It may seem crazy, but tonight will be the third time already that the Red Wings and Coyotes will meet in a playoff rematch. The teams have split the season series so far. The first game was a 2-1 overtime win for the Wings and the second meeting was a 4-2 loss for the Wings. Currently the Red Wings sit 4th in the West with 17 points while the Coyotes are 5 points behind with 12 and sit at 14th. The Red Wings are coming off a weekend in which the had a solid road win in Edmonton on Friday and lost a wild won in Vancouver on Saturday. The Coyotes, on the other hand, are coming off of two straight losses. The big news for the Coyotes is the fact that Shane Doan will not be in the lineu...
