Benchmarking Against the Blues
Detroit and St. Louis meet for the finale of their season series tonight at 7:30 PM in St. Louis. The Red Wings are looking to improve their play, particularly on the power play and the Blues are seeking a tune-up against a team whose playoff success they seek to emulate. Detroit leads the season series 3-2 and have won the last three games which were all at Joe Louis Arena.
The Blues have lost their last two games, both to Central Division teams. Columbus defeated them 5-2 on Saturday and Chicago won 4-3 in a shootout on Thursday night. The Red Wings are coming off a comeback win against Florida on Sunday, winning 2-1 in a shootout.
The Zetterberg-Hudler-Filppula line has been Detroit's top line of late. Zetterberg and Hudler are hot with eight and six points in the last five games respectively. Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo has been performing well with 14 points in the past 14 games. Both starting goalies, Jimmy Howard and Brian Elliott, are providing their squads with strong netminding. Howard has a 1.94 GAA and .926 SV% in his past two games and Elliott is 2-0-1 with a .000 GAA and 1.000 SV% in his last three appearances.
Kyle Quincey is suspended for one game and Ian White returns to the lineup after sitting out as a healthy scratch on Sunday. Gustav Nyquist continues to skate alongside Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen who needs to get going before the playoffs.
