Red Wings Week In Review and a Look Ahead
Last week was a bit a of a bumpy road for the Detroit Red Wings. They came out of the week with a 1-2-0 record. While that might not look too bad since they only lost two games in a row, if you check the box score for the two losses, it's clear that it was a bad week.
Wednesday night was a wild one. The story of the night for the Red Wings was Johan Franzen's 5 goal night. It's still something that can easily make any Wings fan look back on and smile about and something that still has hockey fans in awe when mentioned. It was an entertaining game for sure, but giving up 5 goals in a victory? Not good.
As for Friday and Saturday. What can you say? Being shutout on back to back nights is very unsettling. It's something you would not expect from this very deep Red Wings team. A lot of talk has been about goaltending and how it's the one weakness for Detroit, but you can't win without scoring goals. So after a 7-5 victory, seeing two straight shutouts was almost unfathomable. It's obviously no reason to panic about the offense, but you can only hope for a strong offensive and defensive showing this week rather than having them interchanged from game to game.
This week the Wings will face the Rangers, Predators, and Bruins. There's no easy games in that schedule and they're all obviously big games this time of the season. But that's what you want. You want your team to be tested when it matters.
The big news right now is the return of Pavel Datsyuk. Now him and Cleary are back. Holmstrom is expected back soon. Once the team is back together and the injury bug clears up for once (knock on wood), the Wings are bound to look scary good offensively again. That's an exciting thought, but nothing's guaranteed. It's going to take a lot of hard work if the Wings want to catch the Canucks at this point.
