Red Wings Win Overshadowed By Injury

Last night's game was one for the goaltenders. Both Jimmy Howard and Steve Mason shined for their respective teams. The game was close, and Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings came out on top. With just 20 games played, the Wings still manage to sit atop the Western Conference and obviously atop the Central Division as well. It was an important win because of that fact. As hard as it is to believe, the Blue Jackets were also battling for first place in the west and the central. The Wings still have a game in hand on the Jackets, but it was an important win nonetheless. And it was a great bounce back win after a bad loss to Calgary on Wednesday.

Johan Franzen opened up the scoring in the second period thanks to a nice cross ice pass from Todd Bertuzzi on an odd man rush. That was all the scoring in the first two periods as the goaltenders were the story from the start of the game and really stole the show. They were the reason the game was a low scoring affair, especially Jimmy Howard. Howard faced Jared Boll on a penalty shot and stopped him.

In the third period, the Red Wings extended their lead. Filppula scored on a power play to make it 2-0. Special teams were another big story in this game.

Just under a minute after the Red Wings took the 2-0 lead, the Blue Jackets finally got on the board. RJ Umberger was able to force Zetterberg to turn the puck over and then got the puck to Vermette for the goal. But that was all the Jackets would get past Howard. 2-1 would be the final.

Unfortunately for Mike Modano and the Red Wings, the W wasn't the only story of the night. Mike Modano is said to have had a tendon in his wrist cut. Just the thought of that can send chills up your spine. It's obviously a very serious injury, and there is clearly talk of surgery. He was cut with a skate in the second period.

It's more than just an unfortunate injury to a player that the Wings will have to figure out who to replace with, because no offense to Modano in any way, but that should not be a difficult task with the depth that this team has. But the news is just really bad personally for Mo. He finally started developing chemistry with this team and his offensive production was up. At 40 years old, this is a terrible setback. No one knows the seriousness of the injury. A cut tendon does sound pretty bad to me. For now all we know is that Modano will be out indefinitely, and there is no word yet on if he will need surgery. On behalf of every Wings fan and Mike Modano fan out there, I would like to wish him all the best and I hope the recovery isn't a long one. Get well soon, Mo!

Edit: Modano had surgery this morning. There is still no word on the timeline for the injury.

Skate related injuries like that are the worst.... especially on the wrist? Modano's lucky that it's just a tendon... ouch... could be really bad news for him and the Wings.

Just the thought of it freaks me out. He is very lucky it wasn't worse. From what I read the skate also damaged some nerves. I'm more concerned for him than the Wings. I know the Wings have the depth, but at 40 years old you have to wonder about the recovery and return of Modano. Only time will tell.

hopefully Modano will be back on the ice soon- I always enjoyed watching him play. Good work Alicia-I am enjoying your blogs so far.

One of my most hated players on my most hated teams... but I still feel bad for him because it is a serious injury.
