Brunnstrom Signs, Cuts *UPDATED*
The Detroit Red Wings announced today that eight players have been reassigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins: forwards Joakim Andersson, Landon Ferraro, Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Brent Raedeke; defensemen Travis Ehrhardt and Brian Lashoff; and goaltender Jordan Pearce.
In addition, assistant general manager Jim Nill said forward Chris Conner, defensemen Garnet Exelby and Doug Janik and goalie Joey MacDonald will go on waivers Monday.
They have until noon Tuesday to clear, at which point they would join the Griffins.
This basically means the battle is down to two players; Fabian Brunnstrom and Ryan Johnson, and I fully expect Brunnstrom to beat him out for a roster spot, even if it's for the role of the 13th forward.
The silver lining on the cloud for one player in particular, Gustav Nyquist, is that he was the one of the best Wings in the preseason. He was definitely the most impressive prospect throughout every game he played in. He clearly had the talent to play with the big boys (on a line with Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen) getting powerplay time and showing off his impressive skating and wrist shot. The Hobey Baker finalist will most likely make a push next year for a full time roster spot, if not this year, depending on how things work out with the final cuts.
His escapability is amazing (reminds me of Darren Helm), the only knock is his strength, which will come in time.
The only player that could potentially be lost to waivers is Chris Conner. Even though he is a small forward, his speed is great if he is used on an energy line. MacDonald is expendable because of Pearce and Tomas McCollum, Exelby was very subpar and Janik just can't have a roster spot above Brendan Smith, Mike Commodore or Jakub Kindl.
Expect the Griffins to have a deep team this season with Nyquist and Tatar leading the way.
UPDATE: Detroit has signed forward Fabian Brunnstrom to a one year, $600,000 contract. It is a two way deal, and he will be with the team for their season opener versus Ottawa. Detroit also cut Ryan Johnson from his tryout contract. Logan Pyett was waived today. Brendan Smith was assigned to Grand Rapids. Detroit's roster is now complete:
