Detroit Looks to Avenge Embarassing Defeat
The Detroit Red Wings get another shot at the Nashville Predators tonight, and they will clearly be trying to avenge the 3-0 loss to the Predators a few nights ago. Detroit was shutout in two straight games before hanging on to beat the Rangers 3-2 in Detroit.
The Preds lead the season series 2-1.
Nashville followed up their shutout win by getting shutout themselves. They lost 4-0 to a weak Edmonton Oilers team, and the game today could righten the ship against their Central Division Rivals.
Tomas Holmstrom will be back in the line-up tonight (according to 97.1 The Ticket), and his net presence will be greatly needed, seeing the Wings have only two goals on 30 opportunites on the man advantage. Valterri Filppula will sit for Detroit with a "tweaked" knee. GM Ken Holland says he'll be out about 7 days.
Detroit will need Jimmy Howard to stand on his head like he did against the Rangers, not letting in soft goals and making big saves when needed. He looks to be on the right track to break out of his slumping season, and while his win totals are very impressive, his GAA and S% is not.
Pavel Datsyuk will play his second game since breaking his hand. He had a goal and assist in the win over New York, but he was quoted saying, "(Datsyuk) was rusty and that he needs more games under his belt to feel like himself." Is he serious? He provided the kick in the pants the Wings needed to start scoring some goals. Watch for him to pick it up further against Nashville tonight, who he has 5 points on in 2 games this year.
Jimmy Howard should get the start in goal for Detroit. Pekka Rinne will play for the Preds after being pulled in Edmonton. If not, Anders Lindback will get the call. He beat the Wings 3-2 in early December.
