Devellano Addresses Offseason Needs

Jimmy Devellano was talking on a Detroit radio station, and some interesting topics sprung up about offseason plans, and being in the thick of things, we can conclude the Red Wings will be very aggressive when pursuing free agents and adding players to the team.

Devellano, who drafted Steve Yzerman in his initial season of GM of the Red Wings, made points to say that the Red Wings are looking to get bigger and tougher. It makes sense as they were pushed around a bit by Nashville, but some of the palyers he mentioned made me scratch my head. Joey Kocur, Darren McCarty, and Martin Lapointe. Hmm.

I think what Jimmy is trying to say is that they needed their grinders to play well in the playoffs and they didn't. Drew Miller, Justin Abdelkader and Cory Emmerton were not effective in the first round, but will be helped by a healthy Darren Helm and Patrick Eaves.

Devellano couldn't mention any names because it would be tampering, but that means Ken Holland and company have their eyes on some players. Obviously Zach Parise and Ryan Suter are the top names, but there are other players that might hit the trade market.

Jimmy D also commented that the salary cap is expected to go from $64 million to $70 million, which could give every team $6 million more to work with.

He said the Red Wings are looking at some options in net as well, with Ty Conklin basically out of the picture and Joey MacDonald's future looking cloudy because of back problems. He also said Brendan Smith and Gustav Nyquist are 'pencilled in' to start in Detroit, which could mean the end of the road for Jan Mursak or Cory Emmerton, and possibly a defenceman on the roster (Jakub Kindl?) The Tim Thomas rumours are obviously false as his cap hit is $5 million, but look for the Red Wings to go after some better caliber backups than Conklin. Petr Mrazek is said to be the Red Wings next big goalie coming to Grand Rapids to split time with MacDonald, who would have to clear waivers.

In conclusion, Jimmy says they want to add a scorer, some size up front, upgrade the defence and give Howard some help. All in a few months' work.
