Losing More Ground
The Detroit Red Wings could not get the job done in a 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators. They fell one point behind the Preds in the race for 4th place in the Western Conference. The St. Louis Blues are locks to finish first in the Central Division, and Detroit, Nashville and Chicago are battling it out for the 4th seed and home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Gabriel Bourque and Francis Boullion scored in the middle frame after a scoreless first period, and Alex Radulov scored a few minutes into the third to give Nashville a 3-0 lead. Jiri Hudler scored with about three minutes remainging to spoil Pekka Rinne's shutout bid, but Shea Weber added an empty netter to seal the win.
Mike Babock was not happy with the way his first and third lines played. Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen and Todd Bertuzzi did not mesh at all, with Franzen in particular looking out to lunch. With Darren Helm out, Justin Abdelkader too his spot on the third line between Drew Miller and Dan Cleary and the line was not effective last night.
In turn, Gustav Nyquist will most likely play with Datsyuk and Franzen next game on the top line. Goose has been very good in that role, with a goal and six assists.
Detroit palys Florida on April Fool's Day. Hopefully the Wings won't be fooling around and take it to the Panthers.
