No One Shows Up in Cali
This is what happens when a team doesn't have any compete level. The Detroit Red Wings got demolished 5-2 by the Los Angeles Kings.
No, a 5-2 loss including an empty net goal doesn't seem too bad, but if you assumed that you are dead wrong. Let's put it this way; Tom Hanks was in attendance, and he probably thought the Red Wings were the worst team in the NHL.
Let's forget about the fact that your top forward and defenceman are out in Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom. These are NHL players. They should be pushing for that win with everything they have. Only a few guys did tonight; Gustav Nyquist, Darren Helm and Brendan Smith. The rest of them were poopoo.
Especially Johan Franzen. He scored the Wings second goal with about 4 minutes left. Whoop-de-doo Basil!
Twitter blew up with people praising him for scoring, but really, it isn't hard to see that he was invisible today. With so many guys out Franzen should be the go to guy, instead, he hasn't been a mule but a scape goat and it's well deserved. We don't pay him a bajillion dollars to glide around and go through the motions. Where's that Franzen that took over games the past few years? It was either keep him or Marian Hossa, and right now I wish we kept Hossa instead.
The passing tonight was just brutal. There was no flow and not a whole lot of chances generated by Detroit. Los Angeles outskated, outworked and outgunned Detroit in a game that saw the Wings powerplay fail yet again. They are 0-29 in their last nine games. To make matters worse, Anze Kopitar scored shorthanded.
Jiri Hudler scored the Red Wings other goal. At that point it made the score 2-1, but LA pulled away with some bad plays on Detroit's part; too many to explain.
Jimmy Howard let in four, but you can't fault him for a shorty, nor can you blame him for a powerplay goal by Slava Voynov on a wide open cross crease pass. It was also his first game back from injury and made some big saves early. Detroit only got their first shot nine minutes into the game.
Pray to God that Datsyuk and Lidstrom return soon, because thinking about watching Red Wings hockey makes my brain hurt.
