Suter Interested In Red Wings
According to CSNPhilly.com, Nashville Predators defenceman Ryan Suter has no interest in signing with the Philadelphia Flyers, or any other team in the East. The Front runners for Suter are said to be Nashville, Detroit, Philadelphia and Minnesota. The Flyers wanted to upgrade their defence, but because he doesn't want to sign in the East, the Red Wings look like the top destination if he doesn't say in Nashville.
Minnesota is in the running because it is close to Suter's hometown, but they are apparently ready to throw 'crazy money' at Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils (also of Minnesota), so does that leave room for Suter?
Clearly, Suter is the number one priority on the Red Wings offseason needs list. If the reports are accurate, the Red Wings could trade for his rights, but it will take a lot more than teams out of their division to acquire them. Ken Holland has said that he will be very active and listening to trade offers, which means he will definitely be in on Suter if Nashville deals his rights. It should be noted that the Predators don't let players walk away for nothing, and trading rights are a common occurrence. Let's face it, with the amazing depth of the Predators on defence, maybe losing Suter isn't a bad thing so they can retain some of their other core (Ryan Ellis, Jonathan Blum, Kevin Klein, Roman Josi).
There is also another update regarding a Red Wings free agent target; Matt Carle is apparently locked into a deal with the Flyers. The only reason he can't sign yet is because of uncertainty in how high the salary cap will be next season.
Finally, Parise has said that he want to remain a Devil, saying that he would never sign with the New York Rangers. With people saying that Parise will in fact re-up with Jersey because he said this needs to remember Marian Hossa in 2009 and Brendan Shanahan in 2006, because both said they would like to stay and then they jumped ship (Hossa to a rival). Parise is saying all the right things, and at the crazy price that he will likely be signed too, the Devils might not want to mortgage their future, as they already have Ilya Kovalchuk being payed enough to buy a team and name them Team Kovy.
So don't look too far into these reports, but if they are accurate, the Red Wings might be sitting pretty on both fronts. The possibility of landing both Suter and Parise is still there.
