Wings Draft Six Big Bodies

The Detroit Red Wings finished up the 2012 Draft today, selecting six players; none of which are under six feet tall. here are all the players the Wings took with insight from various scouting reports:

Martin Frk - RW, Halifax Mooseheads, 6'0, 204 lbs

“Martin is a goal scorer. He wants to score, is hungry to score and is that player who is lurking for the chance to score. He plays a straight ahead game and is more of a shooter. He has a good shot and can beat goaltenders with it down the wing and it's a heavy shot. His skating is good in straight lines and he creates separation between himself and defenders. He has good balance with a low center of gravity and is hard to knock off stride. His agility is adequate but not a necessary requirement for the style of game he plays. He uses his body to push to the scoring area and hold off defenders. He recognizes openings and opportunity and with a playmaking center who can get the puck to him, Martin has the abilities to be a good goal scorer at the NHL level.'' - Craig Button (TSN)

Jake Paterson - G, Saginaw Spirit, 6'1, 180 lbs

"Paterson appeared in 42 regular season games in 2011-12, posting an 18-18-3 record with a 3.42 goals-against average, .904 save percentage and one shutout. He played in 12 playoff games, going 6-6 with a 3.05 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. Paterson struggled early in the year for the Spirit before locking up the No. 1 job midway through the season." -

Andreas Athanasiou - C/RW, London Knights, 6'2, 165 lbs

"Athanasiou had 22 goals and 37 points in 63 games last season. Athanasiou played in last season's Canadian Hockey League top prospects games and was considered one of the fastest skaters in junior hockey. He helped the Knights win their second OHL title and reach the Memorial Cup for the second time in the club's history. In 11 playoff games, he had one goal and four assists." - London Free Press

Michael McKee - D, Lincoln Stars (U of W. Michigan Broncos), 6'4, 232 lbs

"McKee is a brawler that picks up penalty minutes for good reason. He plays hard in the corners and drops the gloves often. For a 17 year old, 6'4 and 232 pounds is outstanding size. Going to Western Michigan could pry Danny DeKeyser away to join the Wings next year."

James de Haas - D, Toronto Lakeshore, 6'2, 201 lbs

"He is 6-2 and 201. Has committed to Clarkson University. He had 10 goals and 29 points in 45 games this past season. De Haas was a first-team selection to the OJHL Prospects Team last season." -

Rasmus Bodin - C/LW

"Bodin put up 3 goals and 7 assists in 20 games for his Swedish Division 1 Team after moving up from U-18 where he had put up 9 goals and 17 assists in 29 games there. The Red Wings took a hulking Swede - sounds familiar. Averaged close to a point per game and had 94 penalty minutes at the U-18 level. He's joining high profile HV71 next season." - Winging It in Motown

What do you think of the Red Wings draft?

Kyle Busch

Marty was nasty when I saw him in the QMJHL playoffs this past year playing against Moncton. He -can- shoot, and he's not afraid of contact either. I remember hating him as a Wildcats fan, so I'm sure I'm gonna love him as an eventual Griffin and then Red Wing.

I guess he used to be a top level guy, top 10 last year, I guess injuries dropped him

He did suffer a concussion, but to be honest you couldn't tell from watching him play in the postseason.
