Wings Get a Bogey?
After finishing up my last article on Mike Modano, I stumbled upon another rumour and it certainly was intriguing.
Atlanta apparently is willing to deal just about anyone, including Zach Bogosian.
The rumour popped up today as Bob Duff tweeted that the Wings may have interest in acquiring the 3rd overall pick in the 2008 draft. Bogosian was draft after Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty by the Thrashers.
The interesting fact of the matter is that the asking price from Atlanta was Jiri Hudler, Jonathan Ericsson/Jakub Kindl and a 1st Round Pick.
I have no trouble dealing any of these assets. Bogosian himself was a first round pick, and as a Wings fan you have to be used to giving up picks in return for Cups. Hudler has been pretty non-existent this season, and Ericsson hasn't been the same since his appendectomy in the 2009 playoffs. The only guy I don't want leaving is Kindl, who is showing some promising upside on the 3rd pairing with Ruslan Salei.
Ken Holland was quoted as saying they have "no interest" in Bogosian, but the question is why? He is a 3rd overall pick that given the right situation could blossom into the defenceman he was projected to be. He was taken one spot after Doughty for crying out loud!
Honestly though, if I'm Holland I pull the trigger in a heartbeat. You lose Hudler's crappy contract of 2 million dollars and get rid of Ericsson, who doesn't hit anybody and has a Chara-like frame. He would probably sign elsewhere this offseason anyways.
The Thrashers would have to be nuts to do this, though. Bogosian is a franchise material player, he just needs the right guys around him. Hudler isn't the answer, as he would just go to the KHL rather than play in Atlanta. The only part of the deal that would be intriguing is the first round pick, as Forest Gump says, "you never know what you're gonna get."
If this deal were to happen, the Wings are setting themselves up nicely for a life without Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski. Having Bogosian and Kronwall as your top two defenceman doesn't sound bad, and losing Lidstrom and Rafalski clears a ton of cap space to potentially sign a big name defenceman in free agency.
Here's to hoping this actually happens. Who do you think wins the rumoured deal?
