Can Detroit Make A New Streak?

Tonight the Detroit Red Wings will have a chance to get ahead in the league again in their match-off with the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets. The Wings will take on the Jackets on home ice at the Joe Louis Arena at 7:30PM.

The Wings are currently in sixth place in the National Hockey League and Columbus still sits at the bottom of the standings. Detroit is 3-1 against Columbus this season, only losing once in Columbus back in October. The Jackets being so low standing leaves many Wings fans feeling relieved about the next two games on the schedule. However, every team in this league is fantastic and in order to win, the Wings must bring all of their effort.

Rick Nash is always a star to look out for. He scored on the power play against the Wings last month and has a total of fourteen goals and eleven assists in twenty-eight career visits. He also has two goals in his last three games.

However, the Wings have many stars to face Rick Nash. Filppula and Zetterberg are tied at Filppula’s career-high of sixty-two points and he has a total of twenty-three goals this season. Additionally, Zetterberg has been on fire. He has scored three goals in his last two games. It is impossible to forget how Lidstrӧm’s presence ignited the Wings upon his return to the game on Saturday against Carolina and he has a great record against the Jackets. Lidstrӧm has had two goals and one assist in his last two games against the Jackets. Hopefully Tomas Holmstrom will bring a spark to the game as well after being named a nominee of the Masterton Trophy on Friday. The trophy is awarded every year a NHL player who demonstrates the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication.

Not joining the game will be goalie Jimmy Howard, Johan Franzén, and Jonathan Ericsson. Brendan Smith, the recent Wings star, has also been reassigned to the AHL after playing eleven games with Detroit since February 27th. It is possible that Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason may not be in net as well.

The teams will face each other tonight at 7:30PM and again on Wednesday for their last meeting this season.
