Detroit Cannot Prey On Pekka Rinne
Detroit falls short yet again in a loss against the Nashville Predators last night. Is the missing players hurting the Wings or is it more than that? Let’s evaluate the game.
The game started really well. The Wings came out really strong and played very aggressive. They ended the period trailing the Predators by one, but the playing style definitely did not reflect that. The Wings lead shots on goal 9 to 8. The first goal came from a wrist shot by Patric Hornqvist 7:30 into the first period. Gustav Nyquist had a bad give away and David Legwand took advantage of it. Legwand had a quick pass to Hornqvist, who scored the goal. Only 13 seconds after, Drew Miller scored a beautiful wrap around shot! That line definitely has been really strong for Detroit and it was good to see them get even that quickly. Miller’s goal could not keep the Wings and Predators tied at one. Andrei Kostitsyn buried it on the power play with a spin move a little under half of the period left. Holmstrom had a good try with about 3 minutes left in the first, but could not get it in. The period ended with a 2 to 1 lead for the Predators.
The second period had no goals for either team. The Wings lead shots on goal 10 to 6 for the second period, but just could not get the puck pass Rinne. Hornqvist had another great two on one chance 13 minutes into the second, but MacDonald came in with a big save. Kronwall also had a great chance on the power play with less than four minutes to go, Holmstrom was there to bury it but was knocked down by a Predator player. The Wings had a 5 on 3 chance for about 10 seconds, but could not make anything of it. The next power play was also full of good opportunities for the Wings, but Rinne was a rock in front of the net. The period ended with the same score, the Predators having a 2 to1 advantage over the Wings.
The third period opened with an early goal from the Predators, only four minutes in. Andrei Kostitsyn made another great shot on the power play that got past MacDonald. The Wings continued to battle, which eventually paid off. With 5:25 left to play in the game, Justin Abdelkader scored off of a great play from Gustav Nyquist. The Wings ended the game on a power play, but they could not get a goal from it. The game ended with a 3 to 2 win for the Nashville Predators.
It seems that the key players being out really did hurt the team during this game. There were a couple little mistakes the Wings made, but the power plays really seemed to be the game changers. Larry Murphy mentioned that we really need our star players out there to kill the penalties and play the power plays. Hopefully we get Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom back soon!
