Flyers and Wings Injury Ridden: Which Team Will Come Out On Top?
Both the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings are racking up the injuries. Absences on both teams are taking their toll. The Wings have fell out of first place in the league and in the Central Division, so it is very important for the Wings to rack up the points.
The Wings are missing many defensemen, including star Nicklas Lidstrӧm. Jonathan Ericsson is still out from a fractured wrist. Jakub Kindl left the game against Chicago early due to an upper body injury. Pavel Datsyuk is still missing from the line up. Jimmy Howard and Todd Bertuzzi both have groin strains. Danny Cleary did not practice due to some issues with his knees, but is said to be fine to play against the Flyers. Many of the players are day-to-day though.
Detroit has recalled Doug Janik, Chris Cooner, and goalie Jordan Pearce from the Grand Rapid Griffins. If Howard is unable to play, MacDonald will be taking net.
The Flyers are missing defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros and left wing James van Riemsdyk are sidelined. Philadelphia is currently 10 points behind the Wings in the league standings.
It seems both teams will have some setbacks.
The last time the Flyers and Wings versed each other was on February 12th, where the Wings tied the NHL record for most home game wins with a 4 to 3 win. The Wings have plenty of players that have stepped up their playing with all the injuries. Henrik Zetterberg is five points behind Pavel Datsyuk now and had a goal and two assists during the game on Sunday. Valtteri Filppula is also playing exquisite. Another player to watch is Brendan Smith, wearing jersey number 2. He has recently joined the Red Wings from the Griffins and is playing very well.
Philadelphia will be playing hard for this is their first shot at a three-game winning streak since their seven-game winning streak in the beginning of December. Philadelphia had a 6 to 3 win on Thursday against the New York Islanders and a 1 to 0 win verses the Washington Capitals on Sunday.
It seems both teams have something to be fighting for and will have to be fighting hard for it. Which team will be able to come out on top regardless of the missing players? The game starts tonight at 7PM.
