One Chance Is All It Takes
The Detroit Red Wings have one chance to make a statement to fellow playoff-runners, the New Jersey Devils. Tonight will be the lone time that the Wings and Devils will meet. After last season’s run and comparing their teams this season, it will be an interesting match-up.
Last season, Detroit won two of the only games played against the Devils. The Devils were able to score one goal each game, while the Wings soared at three and four goals a game. However, the season for the Wings has been a roller coaster. With recent injuries, the Wings have not been playing their best. The Wings have had a 4-4-2 record in their last ten games, while the Devils are looking a lot better with their 6-3-1 record.
The Devils are still missing Henrik Tallinder due to blood clotting and fourth-liner Jacob Josefson due to a fractured wrist. The Wings are looking better on the injury report as of late, only missing concussed Patrick Eaves, Darren Helm (torn MCL), and Joey MacDonald due to back spasms.
Johan Franzen played well for the Wings in their last game against St Louis, where he scored two goals in the shootout win they had. Henrik Zetterberg is a player the Devils might want to keep their eye on as well. He has been a rock solid, star player for the Wings before, during, and after the large injury rush they unfortunately had. Setting up plays, scoring goals, assisting goals, and helping out defense is just some of tremendous things Z has been doing on the ice. Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise have both been strong players for the Devils; Kovalchuk scoring in three straight games and Parise has points recorded in five of his last six games.
The Devils, only standing three points behind the Wings in the NHL standings, seem to have a fair chance at turning around their lousy record against Detroit. The Wings have plenty to fight for right now though. With only two games left, including this one, Detroit’s clock is ticking to reassemble their team and get the flow back that was driving their home-winning streak earlier this season.
