Wings Help Howard Reach 100th Career Win Against Phoenix

Detroit Red Wings steal their 13th consecutive home game from the Phoenix Coyotes!

First Period: The Wings came out strong at the start of the period. It took 9 minutes of playing before a goal was made. Phoenix was the one to steal the first goal, which was scored by Vrbata. After Vrbata’s goal, the Wings seemed to have a rough second half of the period. The last couple minutes had good pressure from the Wings though. With only 51 seconds left of the first, the Wings finally got a shot past Smith. Filppula made a beautiful goal with an assist from White. The period ended at a 1 to 1 tie. SOG: 13 Detroit vs 9 Phoenix.

Second Period: The second period consisted of nothing but shots on goal and penalties. Phoenix spent four minutes and Detroit spent six minutes in the box. Even though Detroit had an additional penalty, they still managed to dominate the second period. Emmerton had a great chance in the second, but the puck hit the post. SOG: 11 Detroit vs 6 Phoenix.

Third Period: It only took three minutes for the Coyotes to take the lead again. Pyatt got a puck to tumble over Howard. Howard got a piece of the puck, but he couldn’t get it in his glove. The scoreboard was now at 2 to 1. After the halfway mark hit, Franzén made an impressive goal because of a great pass by Datsyuk. The Wings ended the period at a 2 to 2 tie, sending them into overtime. SOG: 15 Detroit vs 10 Phoenix.

Overtime: Each team had chances in overtime, but neither could take advantage of the extra five minutes given to them. Detroit lead shots on goal, just as they had during regulation. The Wings managed to get 3 shots on goal and Phoenix had two. SOG for the entire game: 42 Detroit vs 27 Phoenix.

Shootout: Datsyuk took the first shootout goal and scored! Brule took Phoenix’s first shot, but was denied by Howard. Hudler could not get his shot by Smith, and then Vrbata made his second goal of the night. The two teams were now tied in the shootout goals, 1 to 1. Ekman-Larsson’s shot was saved by Howard. Zetterberg had the last goal for the Wings during the shootout. Howard ended the game by saving Korpikoski’s shot. The Wings won their 13th consecutive home game. Stars of the Night: 3. #41 Mike Smith, 2. #13 Pavel Datsyuk, 1. #40 Henrik Zetterberg!

What a game! Jimmy Howard takes his 100th career win, Babcock takes his 400th career win, and for the first time since 1965, the Wings win their 13th consecutive home game!! A good birthday present to Kronwall as well. Not much to complain about, that’s for sure. If the Wings can bring this same fight more consistently, they will have the way to the playoffs paved for them.

The next game is against the Chicago Blackhawks (25-13-5) on Saturday, January 14th at 12:30PM. Don’t forget to follow the TCL Red Wings on Facebook and Twitter!

The Zetterberg shootout goal was phenomenal, one of the best shootout goals I have seen for sure. Great game!
