Wings Tame The Sharks With 23rd Home Game Win
Another benchmark game won for the Detroit Red Wings, continuing their home game winning streaks at 23. It was a tough game for both teams, but the Wings were able to come out on top with the help from the star of the game Joey MacDonald.
The Wings controlled the first period, having 8 shots on goal compared to 6 for the Sharks. Henrik Zetterberg took the first goal for the Wings, which he did with a beautiful backhanded shot six minutes into the period. The Wings ended the first period killing a penalty for Bertuzzi for goalie interference.
The second period did not go as well for the Wings. The Sharks dominated with shots on goal, 19 to 8. The Wings also spent six minutes of the second period in the penalty box. Even though the Sharks were overwhelming the Wings, Drew Miller scored the first goal ten minutes into the second period. On Ericsson’s penalty for interference, the Sharks scored their first goal of the game. The goal was looked at for review, but Couture’s power play goal counted to bring the Sharks 2 to 1.
The domination of the Sharks would not last for long though, because the Wings took the control back in the third. It was strange though, within like five minutes; three different Sharks players took a puck to the face or head. White took a slap shot, which hit Vlasic in the face and he was sent to the back bleeding. Another two San Jose players were in similar situations. However, the Wings did not take any penalties for the injuries to the Sharks.
The Wings had a 12 to 8 lead in shots on goal in the third. Each team scored a goal; Helm scored a slap shot seven minutes into the third for the Wings and Marleau scored eight minutes later for the Sharks. The last attempt the Sharks had was to pull Niemi from net, which did not amount to anything. The Wings had a couple shots at the empty net, but nothing went in. The crowd at the Joe was on their feet and cheering loudly. The exciting game ended with a 3 to 2 lead for the Wings.
The three stars of the game were: (1) Joey MacDonald, (2) Drew Miller, and (3) Darren Helm. Joey MacDonald really has been incredible. The next game will be the first away game for the Wings in six games, which will be against the Chicago Blackhawks at 8PM on Tuesday. Jimmy Howard is suppose to be back in net for that game. We will miss watching Joey MacDonald play, but definitely looking forward to having our goalie back!
